- It would be interesting to find out about MDM singing a high
Eb, I don't doubt that he could. He added the high D in Trovatore many times.
- Callas tried to do it with Baum (but did not tell him),
although he did find out later through word of mouth. He was so furious that when she walked to the footlights to perform it, he stood on the back of her cape. I've tried to find out if the choking noise has ever been recorded but to no avail.
I'm sure that MDM has performed a Eb with Callas but unfortunately I don't know where from, but with a voice that big it would have sounded different to say the least.
- Was the Eb in Aida with MDM or Kurt Baum? I think I remember
reading the same thing somewhere, but I thought it was Baum, who sang the high Eb is a fit a rage for Callas including it in the 1950 Mexico Aida... This is all off the top of my head, I could be completly off
- That was a reply to aguacun about del monaco, sorry for not
mentioning it in the original reply and double posting.
- I remember reading somewhere he performed a high Eb on stage
with Maria Callas so it's certainly possible that he did the high D here.
- Hummm... in fact I´d never had even the idea of the Hogh
D...that´s one of the good things of this video because often I cannot listen a spinto-dramatic voice with that easy top notes. BUt it could be interesting to listen to Del Monaco in this rol. IN fact there´s a version of La Donna e Mobile very nice of him. Thank you!
- I will have to check if it is still under Decca's copyright,
as they own the studio recording.
There's no high D though.
- will you upload it?
- Someone said about that high D that is not a good sound. To
me is a scream of the lust of teh Duke and sounds great as it is. ANd he rest of the cabaletta is very elegant. Great Bonisolli
- Maestro bonisolli!
Always powerfull, always wonderfull,
always so unic...
Bravo!
- Beautiful!!!
- He is just the epitomy of a very lonely person, who at least
for his own sake has opera music to entertain him. Its crystal clear that he thrives on the feedback by others no matter whether its positive or negative. The "distance of the internet" gives him the courage to argue. Face to face, he would probably piss his pants even if one was to ask him for directions...
- Dipstick, fiddlestick, still working with sticks...
- theidiot4ever is such a tosspot!
hes so annoying, thinking
he is good enough to even think he is knowledgeable on opera.
he should learn not to be so goddamn offensive and an overall prick.
- Bravo, Franco!!!
- Inquisitor's favourite word is ''fiddlestick''.I assume they
aren't the same person.
- I have a version of del Monaco singing this.
- I wonder if "theidiot4ever" and "belcantoboy" are the same
people. They both love the word dipstick, i guess he likes his sticks...
- Have Mario del Monaco ever sing this?
I wish to listen to
his Version if there is any.
- He's about the best-looking Duke on video I've ever seen.
If I was Gilda I wouldn't have protested too much!
- It's a film version, of course. And he is indeed
lip-syncing, but what does it matter? Bonisolli could do this in a complete performance of the opera, live, three times a week, and with encores. I heard him many times at the Vienna State Opera. By the way, his C's, D-Flat's and D's had the same size, color, roundness and security as every other note in his range.
- Buenísimo, la mayoría de los tenores no se animan a dar el
Re sobreagudo ni siquiera en estudio. Bravo Bonisolli!
- This is correct. It is obvious from many other factors (not
just the audio) that this is a video or film production (not a live performance). It was quite common for operas to be filmed with the performers lipsyncing to previously recorded audio (the same way that they do in movie musicals). Many of the finest opera directors (Ponnelle) and artists (Pavarotti, Domingo, Milnes, Freni, Te Kanawa, etc.) did this - some were just better at lip syncing than others.
- "Drowning cat"? Extreme high notes are in reality,
controlled screams. Pavarotti said so himself. Regarding Bonisolli's voice, he's the only tenor that could match the amazing Joan Sutherland in terms of sheer size of the instrument, combined with the top extension. Now, mjmactenor, what do you think a full spinto's High-D is gonna sound like? Like Juan Diego Florez's or Francisco Araiza's High-D? C'mon, man. Give him a break. Notice that he took no break before the big note? Props!

To High D or not to high D, that is the question? This cabaletta is often cut from live performance, and it is shame. I find it very pleasing,

To High D or not to high D, that is the question? This cabaletta is often cut from live performance, and it is shame. I find it very pleasing, especially when it is performed by the greatest tenors.
