About this song:
This is the theme song of "One Man's Olympic Games", which tells a touching story of a Chinese athlete named Changchun Liu (刘长春). Liu Changchun was the first Chinese to participate in the Olympics, inspiring many of his countrymen to follow in his footsteps.
In 1931, Japan invaded Northeast China and claimed it as an independent state, Manchukuo. A Japanese puppet government was established to put the Chinese in Japanese brutal rule. Thousands of peaceful Chinese civilians were killed by the Japanese.
Changchun Liu was then an excellent sprint athlete in Northeast China. The Japanese concocted a plan to send Liu to the 10th Olympic Games and represent Manchukuo.
"I cannot represent our enemy, the Japanese!" He then decided to represent China to attend the 10th Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Liu was the only one athlete representing China in the 10th Olympics. Due to insufficient financial support, Liu even had to solicit donations from local LA Chinese community to buy a ticket back to China.
Liu's pioneering way to the Olympics is of symbolic value to the Chinese, past and present.
Hongliang Liu, who is Changchun Liu's son, said, "If my father was here now, he would be amazed to see Beijing host the Games in 2008!"
Changchun Liu passed away in 1983.
